Tis the Season of the Witch
Recycled Paper Greetings Halloween card
H A L L O W E E N is the oldest of our human celebrations; including traditions that would become modern Christmas, Thanksgiving and many other holidays that are rooted in ancient Sun festivals. We’re talking about a history that has a written record dating back to 670 B.C., and a tradition that has evolved over many centuries and cultures. Halloween appears to be here to stay.
But it wasn’t popularized in the United States until it morphed into a children’s holiday, survived the Great Depression and after it was cancelled due to rationing in World War II. It came roaring back with the Baby Boomers. The 1950s saw the birth of our modern Halloween craze, complete with a love of horror films.
We watched old black and white horror movies like The Mummy, Frankenstein, Dracula and plotted our extortion routes to Trick or Treat.
The term “Trick or Treat” was first found in print in 1927, in Alberta, Canada. It spread quickly to western United States but migrated east in the 1930s.
Early national attention was given to Halloween in the October 1947 issue of the popular children’s magazine ‘Jack and Jill’. The custom was firmly established in popular culture by 1952, when Walt Disney released the cartoon ‘Trick or Treat’ in October of that year:
In the 1970s and 1980s, with escalating violence Halloween returned to its more dangerous roots ad the news media christened it “Devil’s Night.” Devil’s night, October 30th is related to early Celtic traditions but dates back to the 1930’s in Detroit, Michigan, featuring the fires of ancient tradition in the form of urban arson.
In other parts of the United States, Devil’s Night was known as Mischief Night. It was featured in the movie, ‘The Crow’, in 1994:
The current return to a fascination with vampires, zombies and werewolves inspires many amazing Halloween make-up tutorials:
And today it appears that the adults have gotten in on the act
of confectionery extortion.
